The Travaglino estate is located in Calvignano, which is a little town based in the Oltrepo’ Pavese. The area, in the south of Lombardy, that wedge from the fertile Po’ Valley to the Mediterranean Sea, is well known for having a bunch shape which bounds with the regions of Liguria, Piedmont and Emilia Romagna. The estate has the privilege to raise 400 hectares in a single batch – Two hundred of them are forests destined as a wild hog hunting reserve, which, has been done with the purpose to maintain away the poachers. Hundred and twenty hectares are arable lands and the remaining eighty hectares are vineyards. Moreover, within the property, there are 12 farmsteads, a historic village and an inn with restaurant and few rooms.

Vineyard Location: Vigna del Portico – Calvignano

Soil Type and Exposure: Brown, calcareous, clayey soil, on marl and sandstone. Facing south-east at 220 m above sea level

Grape Variety: 85 % Pinot Noir and 15 % Chardonnay

Denomination: DOCG (controlled and guaranteed designation of origin)

Cultivation Method and Planting Density: Spurred cordons with 4,800 vines per hectare

Maximum Yield per Hectare: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – 5,000 litres per hectare

Grape Harvest: Traditional hand-picking in the last week of August

Wine Making: Strictly white with soft pressing and fermentation of only 50% of the must extract, after rigorous selection of the best grapes from the farm. Fermentation in small controlled-temperature steel tanks

Bottling: During late spring, wines made from the selections of the two varieties are blended with targeted proportion and the cuvée obtained is bottled to produce, after slow fermentation and refinement, this prestigious Classic Method sparkling wine.
